Marian holds off CL South baseball

The Marian Central baseball team got balanced offensive production as four players drove in two runs each in a 10-8 win Saturday over Crystal Lake South in Woodstock.

Nick Albanese and Mike Crook added a double and two walks each for the Hurricanes (3-5). The Gators (7-4) got a big day from Michael Avella, who went 3 for 4 with a triple and five RBIs.

Jacobs 5, Conant 2: At Algonquin, Jacobs scored four runs in the fifth inning to beat Conant. Grant Kale was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and scored two as well. Brandon Heiss pitched six innings, allowing two unearned runs and striking out seven for the Golden Eagles (12-4).

Jacobs 3, Niles Notre Dame 1: At Algonquin, Ben Murray was 1 for 1 with two walks and a run scored for the Golden Eagles. Ryan Sargent threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out nine for Jacobs.

Johnsburg 7, Anitoch 1: At Johnsburg, Kevin Kordik struck out 10 over six innings in the win for the Skyhawks (5-8). Collin Ridout went 2 for 3, hitting two doubles and driving in two in a nonconference game. 

Huntley 13, Belvidere 3 (5 inn): At Huntley, the Red Raiders cruised to victory in five innings. Matt Sullivan was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Brandon Altergott and Mark Skonieczny added two hits apiece for Huntley (11-2-1).

Prairie Ridge 6, Wauconda 1: At Crystal Lake, Prairie Ridge scored four runs in the first inning to lead it past Wauconda. Chris Slack was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, and Austin Covers got the victory pitching for the Wolves (6-9).

McHenry 8, Lake Zurich 1: At McHenry, the Warriors used a four-run first inning to propel them past Lake Zurich is a nonconference matchup. Payton Lykins was 3 for 3 for McHenry (10-2) with a double and two runs scored. Cody Freund got the win for the Warriors.

Grant 11, Cary-Grove 6: At Cary, the Trojans had 11 hits, but fell to Grant in a nonconference matchup. Dean Christakes, Jason Barrett and Larkin Hanselmann added two hits each for the Trojans (8-7).

Stevenson 12, Crystal Lake Cenrtral 4: At Crystal Lake, the Tigers allowed six runs in the first inning. Robert Aunan and Riley Popell had two hits apiece for Crystal Lake Central (2-10) in a nonconference loss.

Hampshire 4, St. Edward 0: At Hampshire, Whip-Purs starting pitcher Trey Schramm went six innings, allowing four hits and striking out seven in the win. Michael Merchut and Jayson Fleisner added doubles for Hampshire. (3-9-1).

TENNIS

Maine South Invitational: At Park Ridge, Kendrick Chong of Jacobs won all three of his matches, taking first place in No. 2 singles. Kailash Panchapakesan finished third in No. 1 singles, winning two of his three matches. The Golden Eagles’ doubles pair of Riley Toomire and Riley Rowan knocked off the top seed in their first match, and finished second in No. 1 doubles.

Marian Central 4, Chicago Christian 1: At Woodstock, the Hurricanes got a No. 1 singles win from Charles Shin and No. 2 singles win from Chris Daniels.

TRACK AND FIELD

Minooka Invite: At Minooka, Huntley and McHenry tied for fifth place with 44 points. Jesse Reiser of McHenry won the 1,600 meters (4:19.87) and Huntley’s Keagan Smith finished second (4:21.17).
