HUD: Aurora officials to build affordable housing

AURORA — Aurora officials have agreed to develop 100 units of affordable housing to settle a federal discrimination finding.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the agreement with the Aurora Housing Authority on Thursday.

HUD approved the demolition of the Jericho Circle public housing complex based on a plan to create up to 119 new, mixed-income housing units at that site and at scattered single-family sites, with 10 percent of the units accessible to the disabled.

But the housing authority instead opted for a plan to build 40 scattered site units for veterans, the disabled and seniors, with only 5 percent of those accessible.

HUD says that would have discriminated against people with disabilities, families with children and those on the authority's waiting list, most of whom are African-American.
