Athlete of the Week

Delaney Pruitt, Johnsburg, jr., forward

Last year’s McHenry County Girls Soccer Player of the Year has been just as impressive this year. The junior forward has been one of the area’s top goal scorers all season. On Tuesday, Pruitt added to her tally by scoring two goals in the Skyhawks' 4-2 win over Willows Academy in the Class 1A Richmond-Burton sectional semifinal.

“She really has caused problems for any defense that we have faced this year,” coach Rob Eastland said. “She’s a tough weapon to handle up front, and I’m lucky to have a player like her for another year after this one.”

NOTEWORTHY

Johnsburg tops R-B, will play for sectional championship: Over the weekend, the Johnsburg Skyhawks defeated Richmond-Burton in the Class 1A Harvard Regional championship game 1-0 in overtime on a goal from Sarah Weaver. They advanced to the Richmond-Burton sectional, where they knocked off Willows Academy, and will play Elgin St. Edward on Friday night for the sectional championship. The Skyhawks went to the state tournament last season.

Many local teams advance in playoffs: The playoffs for Class 2A and 3A are well underway, and many of the local teams have found success. The Woodstock Blue Streaks knocked off Woodstock North to advance to the Marian Central regional final. Crystal Lake Central, Huntley, McHenry, and Prairie Ridge won their opening matches, and will play for their regional championships. Marian Central, Crystal Lake South, Dundee-Crown, and Cary-Grove were all in action Wednesday in regional semifinals.

Weather presents problems: Many of Tuesday’s playoff games underwent weather delays or postponements due to rain and lightning. Prairie Ridge’s regional semifinal against Chicago Resurrection underwent two lightning delays before the game was finally called.

“It’s not fun to play in, but it is what it is,” Wolves coach JC Brown said. “Both teams have to deal with it, and it comes down to who can execute their game plan better.”
