Prep Roundup: Jacobs' Rowan and Toomire win sectional doubles title

At Algonquin, Riley Rowan and Matt Toomire won the doubles championship for Jacobs on Saturday with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Huntley’s Matt Frederick and Jake Grabner at the Jacobs Sectional.

The top four place winners in singles and doubles qualify for the state tournament beginning Thursday.

In the singles championship, Jacobs' Kailash Panchapakesan lost to South Elgin’s Andre Norasith, 6-4, 6-3.

For third place, Jacobs’ Kendrick Chong defeated Hampshire’s Elisha Hougland, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, in singles and Dundee-Crown’s Chad Wagner and Brad Spangenberg defeated Jacobs' Will Liby and Kyle Powell, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5.

Jacobs won the team championship with 30 points, followed by South Elgin and Huntley both with 16, Dundee-Crown (13) and Hampshire (11).

BASEBALL

CL South 8, Wheeling 3: At Crystal Lake, Michael Avella went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs to lead the Gators (15-14) to a nonconference win. AJ Howaniec was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Paul Wille added two RBIs. 

Marengo 8, Rockford Auburn 1: At Marengo, Justin Vogel went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Indians (10-14) to a nonconference win. Mike Villarreal added a double and two RBIs. 

Huntley 9, Grant 2: At Fox Lake, the Red Raiders (24-7-1) won in nonconference play. Trevor Symbal was 3 for 3 with four runs scored and a triple, and Troy Cantu added two runs and three RBIs. 

Notre Dame Prep 3, Hampshire 0: At Chicago, the Whip-Purs (13-17) lost in nonconference play. Dillon Kuhn was 2 for 3 for Hampshire. 

Cary-Grove 8, Stevenson 6: At Cary-Grove, Dean Christakes was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, a double and three RBIs to lead the Trojans (20-13) in nonconference play.

Maine South 6, Jacobs 5: At Park Ridge, the Golden Eagles (22-13) lost an early lead in a nonconference loss. Ryan Sargent was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. 

McHenry 11, Hersey 5: At McHenry, the Warriors (21-11) traile,d 3-2, heading into the bottom of the fourth but scored the next eight runs to win in nonconference play. Payton Lykins was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, two doubles and two RBIs. 

SOFTBALL

Grant 6, CL Central 2: At Fox Lake, the Tigers (15-13) lost in nonconference play. Savanah Frank had a home run and two RBIs, and Megan Mahaffy was 2 for 3. 

Joliet West Quad: At Joliet, Huntley lost to Marian Catholic and Joliet West. The Red Raiders (19-16) gave up two runs in the eighth inning to lose to Marian Catholic, 6-4. Taylor Stone had two RBIs and Megan Baczewski had a double and an RBI. 

Huntley lost to Joliet West, 8-3. Michelle Caputi had an RBI. 

Marengo 6, Lakes 1: At Lake Villa, Veronica Ruelius and Taylor Carlson each hit a home run to lead the Indians (25-10) to a nonconference win. Ruelius had two RBIs. Mariah Dionne (17-4) got the win, striking out six. 

Wauconda 4, Cary-Grove 1: At the Bandit Jamboree in Rosemont, the Trojans (17-13) lost in nonconferene play. Lisa Semro had a double and an RBI, and Brianne Prank added a run scored and a triple. 

Quad City Super Duals: At Geneseo, McHenry lost two games and tied one at the Dual. Against Geneseo, Warriors pitcher Kristin Koepke pitched seven innings, allowing one hit and striking out five, but the game ended in a 0-0 tie. McHenry followed the tie with a 4-1 loss to Moline. Koepke had a double. In their final game, the Warriors (22-9-1) lost in five innings to United Township, 16-2. Alex Martens was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple, and Carly Mattson added a double and an RBI.     

Geneva 8, Prairie Ridge 7: At Crystal Lake, the Wolves (20-8) lost in nonconference play. Claire Bowman was 3 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs, and Sam Hempen was 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI.
