Prep Roundup: Marengo holds off Belvidere in baseball regional

At Belvidere, the Marengo baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning Monday and led the rest of the way for a 6-5 victory over Belvidere in the Class 3A Belvidere North Regional play-in game.

Marengo (11-14) got two hits and two RBIs from Justin Vogel and a strong first four innings from pitcher Koty Kissack (4-3). The Indians scored once in the fourth and added two in the sixth to hold off the Bucs, who scored three times in the sixth inning, cutting the lead to one.

Noah Klick eventually nailed down the save with a ground ball out and runners on first and second in the seventh. No. 4-seeded Marengo meets top-seeded Boylan at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in a regional semifinal.

Genoa-Kingston 3, Hampshire 1: At Genoa, Hampshire fell behind early and lost to Genoa-Kingston, 3-1, in the first round of the Class 2A Hampshire Regional. Alex Crinigan allowed three runs over six innings and struck out six in taking the loss.

The Cogs scored two runs in the second inning to take the early lead. G-K added another run in the fifth.

In the top of the seventh, Dillon Kuhn reached on an error for the Whip-Purs. Two batters later, RJ Consigny tripled to center field to get Hampshire on the board. But the next batter struck out to end the game.

Consigny finished with two hits and a walk.

SOFTBALL

Johnsburg 10, Chicago North Grand 2: At Chicago, Morgan Post struck out 11 and allowed one earned run to help 17th-seeded Johnsburg (5-22) defeat 16th-seeded Chicago North Grand in a Class 3A Elmwood Park Regional opener. Kendall Huemann homered, and Carly Wilson, Erin Pusateri, Paige King and Chelsea Benbenek each had two RBIs.

The Skyhawks will face top-seeded Wauconda in a regional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Elmwood Park.

Sycamore 8, Hampshire 4: At Hampshire, the Whip-Purs (19-14) lost in the play-in game of the Class 3A Burlington Central Regional.

Rockford Jefferson 14, Dundee-Crown 12: At Rockford, the Chargers (4-16) lost in the their first game of the Class 4A Huntley Regional.
