CHICAGO – The Marengo Park District and the village of Lakemoor are among 22 entities that will receive grants to fund conservation projects and improvements to public spaces.

The $155,000 worth of grants were awarded to municipalities, park districts and forest preserve districts across nine northern Illinois counties by ComEd and the nonprofit Openlands.

The goal of the Green Region program is to relieve some of the financial strain faced by area government, many of which have had to make cuts to environmental projects, according to a news release.

The grant recipients have 18 months to expend the dollars. Applicants were eligible to receive a maximum of $10,000 per project.

The Marengo Park District was given the funds to help improve its hiking trails and make them more accessible to seniors and those with disabilities.

The village of Lakemoor aims to leverage the dollars to meet the goals outlined in its open space and pedestrian corridor plan.
