Shrink County Board size

Published: Friday, June 20, 2014 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

The good old boys are circling the wagons once again in McHenry County.

They will do anything to protect their lavish taxpayer-funded perks as County Board members. While other county governments have reduced their size, despite being much larger than McHenry County, our County Board stubbornly refuses to do the same – or even consider it.

How can you blame them? Upon election, the 24 good old boys receive full-time benefits – free health care and generous pensions. Some board members chronically miss more than 25 percent of the board’s meetings and still get their full salaries, benefits and even mileage reimbursements. Not bad for a part-time job.

We taxpayers are the suckers. We are the rubes that allow the machine to get away with it, but we can’t afford to let this continue any longer.

The size of the board and the perks members get must be reduced. Anything less is unacceptable.
