Miller, Garrels resign from District 50 school board

HARVARD – Two District 50 school board members resigned this week, school officials said.

Genny Miller and Steve Garrels each submitted letters of resignation Tuesday, effective immediately. Neither provided a reason for the decision, District 50 spokesman Bill Clow said.

Superintendent Lauri Tobias informed the board of the move at Wednesday's school board meeting, during which the two were absent.

The two are the third and fourth resignations from District 50's school board since May 2013.

Garrels, an accountant, won one of four available spots in the spring 2013 elections. Seven people ran in the race.

Miller was elected in 2011 with two others, Jessica Bauman and Lance Shelton. All three have since left the board.

Bauman resigned in May 2013. Tobias said at the time that Bauman made the decision because of a lack of time to devote to the position. She had recently decided to go back to school, Tobias said.

Shelton stepped down from his spot in January of this year. He, too, cited a lack of time for the position. He told the Northwest Herald that he'd recently taken on more responsibility with his job and didn't want to compromise time with family to remain on the board.

Miller and Garrels couldn't be reached for comment on Friday.
