Springfield police issue 300 cellphone citations

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield police say they've issued hundreds of citations to people using cellphones while driving more than six months after a state-wide ban took effect.

A Springfield police traffic supervisor tells the State Journal-Register the department has issued more than 300 citations for using a hand-held electronic device while driving since the ban started Jan. 1.

He says drivers caught violating the law often tell officers they didn't know about the ban. He says the department used the Internet and airwaves to inform drivers of the law change.

A Sangamon County undersheriff says compliance will go up as more people buy hands-free devices and more vehicles support them.
