NAPERVILLE – A car has plunged into a water-filled quarry in the Chicago suburb of Naperville, killing two passengers who were unable to escape the vehicle.

The driver swam to safety and has been charged with drunken driving.

According to a news release from the Naperville Police Department, the car ran off the road around 2 a.m. Saturday, crashed into several trees and landed in the Park District quarry.

The driver, 21-year-old Michael T. Szot of Geneva, was arrested after his release from a hospital. He is charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless homicide.

Police and Fire Department divers recovered the two passengers, who were pronounced dead at a hospital. They were both 21 years old.

It was not immediately clear if Szot already had an attorney.
