ELGIN – A Kane County judge has ordered a fitness test for a prisoner who escaped while being transported from a mental health facility outside Chicago.

The Daily Herald reported the judge on Monday ordered 33-year-old Jesse Vega’s test for next week. Vega is jailed in Kane County on $1 million bail. He is next due in court Aug. 7.

Vega managed to escape July 16 from a transport vehicle as he was being taken from the Elgin Mental Health Center to the Lake County courthouse in Waukegan.

Vega faces previous domestic battery charges and the Kane County state’s attorney has charged him with one count of escape.

The Illinois Department of Human Services is investigating how he was able to escape.
