CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake Community School District 47 will give kindergartners and their families an opportunity to become familiar with the bus service before school starts.

In an effort to ease fears about riding the bus, the district's transportation service will host an open house Wednesday at the bus garage on 1204 S. McHenry Ave. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will feature various interactive stations including a live bus safety show by “Buster the Bus,” a coloring station, and an opportunity to board the bus, learn about its safety equipment, practice safe seating and take a short ride.

Kathy Anes, director of transportation, said last year’s event was a success with more than 350 people in attendance and expected an even better turn out in the event's second year.

“We heard from some parents that their children who were initially fearful about riding the bus actually got excited about it after the event, " Anes said.

In order to keep a steady flow of people going through the house, district officials ask families to attend the event at a designated time corresponding with the first letter of their last name.

Last names beginning with A through F are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.; G through L from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; M through R from 11 a.m. through noon; and S through Z from noon to 1 p.m.

For more information, people can contact Anes at 815-455-0558.
