EAST DUNDEE – A man suspected in the fatal stabbing of his 85-year-old grandmother in her northern Illinois home has been arrested in Texas.

The Daily Herald in Arlington Heights reported 41-year-old Richard Schmelzer was taken into custody Monday in Frisco, Texas. He is currently awaiting extradition.

Schmelzer is charged with two counts of murder in the death of Mildred “Dodie” Darrington. She was found dead July 18 in her home in the village of East Dundee.

East Dundee Police Chief Terry Mee hasn’t disclosed a possible motive for the woman’s killing.

Mee said authorities were aware of Schmelzer’s whereabouts for three days. He said officers waited to make the arrest because they didn’t want to storm the house where Schmelzer lived with his four daughters and endanger the girls.
